Activities in and around Cape Town …

Play a round of golf

at Westlake Golf Club which is next door to Greenkeeper Lodge. Clovelly and Steenberg courses are 10min away for golfers keen for a new challenge, click here for more info

learn to surf

at MUIZENBERG, Cape Town’s most popular swimming beach with 40km of wide sands and regular rollers which are a great drawcard for families and surfers.  An added attraction is the warmer current of False Bay.  It sports a variety of surf & adventure operators, restaurants and coffee shops – try Knead for the best freshly-baked breads and pastries.

sample the catch of the day

at KALK  BAY, Cape Town’s most famous fishing village.  It has a lively working harbour and the catch of the day can be bought fresh off the boats or sampled nearby.  Browse through the many antique stores, galleries and bookshops and soak up the quirky, relaxed atmosphere in a coffee shop or in a restaurant perched above the waves.

swim

at FISH HOEK, renowned for its 2,5km beach which fringes a bay protected from the currents and stronger surf in the rest of False Bay.  For this reason it is one of the safest swimming beaches in Cape Town. Keep an eye on the sharkspotter’s flags which inform you of the conditions.

visit the penguins

at BOULDERS BEACH near Simon’s Town, one of several small sheltered bays partially enclosed by 540 million year old granite boulders.  A colony of African Penguins which settled there in 1982 has grown to about 3000 in recent years and you can view these quaint flightless birds at close range from boardwalks or even enjoy a swim with them in the sea!

watch the oceans meet

at CAPE POINT Lighthouse which sits 238 metres above the sea at the end of the peninsula in the Cape of Good Hope Reserve, part of the Table Mountain National Park, a natural World Heritage Site.  It marks the meeting point at the most south-westerly tip of Africa of the cold Benguela current of the Atlantic and the warm Agulhas current of the Indian ocean.  Take some time to experience the unique fauna and flora (over 1,200 indigenous species), the grandeur of the scenery and the history of the many shipwrecks.  Book a table at the Two Oceans Restaurant and marvel at the breathtaking view across False Bay to the Helderberg Mountains.

hike with the baboons

CHACMA BABOONS are fascinating to us humans and Baboon Matters offer a 2-3 hour walking tour through mountain fynbos to spend time with them.  Baboons can also be encountered in the Cape Point Reserve but do remember they are wild animals and must never be fed.

go wine tasting

CONSTANTIA VALLEY WINE ROUTE, dating back to 1685, is the oldest wine-making region in the southern hemisphere and is on the doorstep of Greenkeeper Lodge.  It comprises 8 wine farms, each with its own tradition and premium wines.  Venture further afield and choose one of the legendary wine routes of Stellenbosch, Franschoek or Paarl and spend an unforgettable day enjoying some of the Cape’s finest wines in breathtaking surroundings. Take your own, or treat yourself to a meal or a gourmet picnic lunch available from vineyard restaurants.

enjoy birding

at ZANDVLEI ESTUARY and RONDEVLEI  NATURE RESERVES near Muizenberg.  The wetland and lake of Rondevlei is home to almost 230 types of bird, as well as many reptiles & mammals, including a small hippopotamus population!  Take your binoculars along to enjoy an attractive walk along the water’s edge and visit the six bird hides.  Zandvlei is an important Wetland, River system and Estuary and the large body of water attracts bird watchers, walkers, picnickers, canoeists and windsurfers (an excellent spot for beginners);  there is also a caravan park.

drive Chapman’s Peak

HOUT BAY is worth driving to from Noordhoek via the scenic 9km Chapman’s Peak Drive which offers breathtaking views.  Encircled by mountains, Hout Bay boasts an active fishing harbour complete with numerous restaurants and a lovely swimming beach.  Buy the best fish and chips in Cape Town to enjoy as a picnic on Chapman’s Peak Drive or watch a spectacular sunset from Chapman’s Peak Hotel over a platter of calamari.

take a boat ride

to see CAPE FUR SEALS which inhabit Duiker Island off Hout Bay and Seal Island off Simonstown.  Clumsy on land but  graceful in the water,  they can be viewed in their natural habitat by taking a boat trip from either town.

watch sharks and whales

SEABIRDS, SHARKS AND WHALES  can be viewed from close-up on wildlife boat trips  that depart from Simon’s Town jetty.  Southern Right whales come into the protected waters of False Bay to calve from June -Nov and sighting them is a special experience.

catch the cablecar

with TABLE MOUNTAIN CABLEWAY.  The best views of Cape Town are from the top of Table Mountain!  The rotating cablecar takes you to the summit in 10 minutes and once on top there are 2km of pathways and magnificent views from 12 viewing sites and decks.  A 1.5 hr walk from the top cable station will take you on a circular route to Maclear’s Beacon, the highest point on Table Mountain (1085m).
